Self Confidence, Oakley Style

Yesterday, I helped Oakley log in to send an email to a favorite person of hers. I left her, and off she went.
Last night, I received an email indicating that there was a new comment on a flamingobear post. It was from Oakley. The post was “The Call of the Bird“, and the comment reads like this:
WOW! I never knew I could write that well. Ben Oswald is better, though.
You may be wondering who this great author Ben Oswald is… Well, keep wondering… it’s actually another story Oakley is writing!
Aspen writes too… about Camp Chippewa

I’ve written on several occasions about a little writer named Oakley, but she isn’t the only one in this house. No, no, Aspen is quite a writer herself (she just doesn’t know it yet).
This is a piece she wrote for school under the assignment “My Labor Day Weekend”
On my Labor Day weekend in 2010, I went to Camp Chippewa. Camp Chippewa is a summer camp that my dad went to from 1988-1990. He was a counselor there in 1993, 1994, 1995, and 1997. Camp Chippewa is only a boy’s camp, but many former campers and counselors brought up their family’s for the 75th reunion. There was a huge turnout with 130 people. One of my favorite things there was the Paul Bunyan Swing. It was a huge rope swing attached to a bungee cord that was tied between two trees. Then there was a 10 ft. tall platform that you would jump off of with the swing. Oh, I forgot to mention Camp is located the shores of Cass and Buck Lake. It was a great weekend.
The End
“The Orange Tiger”, by Oakley Martin

He was so pretty. He was very valiant. He had very bright black and orange hairs. He had a very loud roar. And that was who he was. The Orange Tiger. They called him magnificent. Awesome. Their leader. Spectacular. Their war hero. At least against elephants. But maybe not against giraffes. The animals just loved him. Adored him. In fact, they loved him so much they called him their king and that was just that. That was the way that the Orange Tiger was made. It was just how he was.
the end
This is a story that Oakley wrote in her notebook. For no apparent reason. I love it.
Oakley’s Note to Lindy

My daughter Oakley is both smart and funny. She’s in first grade, where many kids are still learning the basics of reading and writing, where many are only doing those things when asked. Oakley? She’s doing them for fun.
My favorite part of this is the combination of cultural awareness (spelling our president’s name) and unawareness (thinking he has a “palace”). Oh, that and the fact that, even though she’s smart as a tack, she still goes for the humorous (and slightly off-color) finale. I don’t expect Obama will be asking her to write any speeches for him.
I’ve included the text here so it’s easier to read:
Oakley’s Learning Book

Aspen wrote this for Oakley. Everything is exactly as written (except I can’t get the slanting text to work here on the website).
Oakley’s Learning Book.
How To Write. To Write a story you need a beging sentence to intorduce your story. After you write your beging sentence intorduce the characters in your story. Then begin your story. For example,
This is a story about caring. The characters in the story are Oakley and Lindy. Well this is how the story began. They loved each other very much. One day they went… Tell the rest of your story.

Jenn was cleaning out Oakley’s school bag tonight, as she often does. I’d like to share with you the text… (Oakley, the writer, refers to herself as Iris.)

And the back of the card…

And here’s the back. It is difficult to read, so I’ll quote it here for you…
“You are the best daddy ever! I had a lot of fun this year with scooer[sic]! You were the best coach I ever had!
“I really like the bed you made for me and our play set! I love you very much! From Aspen! To daddy! 11-9-07”
Really, I think my daughter is amazing. While she might be prone to overstatement, I think her heart is so awesome to write something like this on her own. I’m awfully proud of my little girl.
