It was a lovely spring afternoon, so we decided to rent bikes to tour the National Mall and memorial parks. Along with all the other tourists! It took us three stops at bike rentals before we found bikes. We rode them all over! Without a doubt, this is the ideal way to cover a lot of ground and see a lot of neat stuff. After three hours our bums were definitely sore! We saw the White House as well as ALL of the monuments and memorials (Washington, Lincoln, WWII, Vietnam Veterans, Korean War, MLK, FDR, and Jefferson). Whew! We declared MLK to be our favorite because it was simple, on the tidal basin, and surrounded by beautiful cherry blossoms. I couldn’t decide whether to be in front leading the bike pack or stay behind and be the caboose, so I did a little of both. When in front, I heard a curious incident behind me. My panic rising, I envisioned skinned elbows and knees. I quickly circled back to find Lou entangled in an unsuspecting street vendor’s lanyard collection. Apparently some pedestrians didn’t yield their right of way and forced Lou to swerve. Luckily, no blood! She wasn’t hurt, and lanyards aren’t fragile. But when they’re strewn all over the ground and entangled in handlebars like streamers on a little girl’s bike, they are funny!
